That narrative is fundamentally wrong.

The confusion isn't a bug in the food safety system. It's a feature. Faced with massive uncertainty, regulators issue broad, panic-inducing warnings covering entire product categories or geographic regions. They tell the public to avoid all bagged salad or all imported herbs from an entire foreign state.

This isn't targeted public health. It's carpet bombing.

I have watched agricultural operations lose millions of dollars overnight because a blanket recall implicated an entire crop zone, even though their specific fields were hundreds of miles from the actual contamination source. The financial damage falls heavily on mid-sized domestic farmers who comply with every sanitation standard, while the real source of contamination escapes without accountability because the evidence was washed away weeks prior.

The Myth of the Wash Step

Ask a typical consumer how to prevent Cyclospora infection and they will tell you to wash their produce. Ask a grocery store chain, and they will highlight their triple-washed processing protocols.

Publicly identifying specific supply chain failures creates real economic consequences for negligent operators. Broad regional warnings do the opposite: they socialize the cost of negligence across the entire industry while shielding the offender behind a cloud of statistical noise.

The Economic Reality No One Wants to Face

There is a reason these changes haven't happened. They are expensive, uncomfortable, and require the food industry to abandon the cheap produce model.

Deep-tier supply chain visibility costs money. Rapid molecular testing of agricultural water adds operational overhead. Decentralizing processing plants reduces economies of scale, raising the price of a bag of salad at the supermarket.

Corporate buyers for major retail chains operate on razor-thin margins. They demand cheap greens year-round, forcing growers to prioritize volume and speed over absolute safety controls. Meanwhile, regulatory agencies prefer issuing dramatic recall announcements because it keeps their names in headlines and justifies their annual budget requests without requiring them to re-architect national agricultural infrastructure.

Until buyers pay for real prevention and regulators abandon recall theater, we will keep repeating this cycle. An outbreak will occur, the CDC will issue a panic-driven warning, stores will throw away tons of safe food, the media will complain about "confusing" instructions, and the real source of the parasite will remain completely untouched.

Stop waiting for a clearer recall notice to save you. The recall was never meant to protect your health—it was meant to protect liability.
