They point to the specialized pod design, the lack of a steering wheel, and the stamp of government approval as proof that the future has finally arrived.

They are missing the entire point.

Regulatory approval is not product-market triumph. Clearing a government checklist means you met a bureaucracy's standards for safety cases and test parameters. It does not mean you have built a viable business, solved the fundamental unit economics of urban mobility, or figured out how to move humans at scale without burning piles of venture capital on remote-assistance safety blankets.

I have watched logistics firms and mobility startups bleed millions into custom hardware bets while ignoring the real friction point. Everyone wants to talk about the steering wheel missing from the cabin. Nobody wants to talk about the balance sheet.

Traditional human drivers handle ambiguity through context, shared cultural cues, and general intelligence. Autonomous stacks handle ambiguity by stopping in the middle of the street and calling home for help.

Until a system can navigate a completely unfamiliar rural highway in a blizzard without prior HD mapping, it is not autonomous. It is an expensive train running on invisible tracks of code.
